There are two types of log sets: vented and vent-free (ventless):

Vented

A vented set requires a chimney or external vent to expel its gas and combustion gases from the living space. Made from high-quality ceramic and refractory materials, vented gas appliances produce a realistic fire appearance with substantial heat output.

Ventless
