Here at Sweepnman, Inc. we love to give back, which is why we’re making donations to the Jimmy Fund of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. The Jimmy Fund is part of Dana-Farber’s fund-raising mission for cancer patients and cancer research, ensuring those diagnosed get the high-quality care and attention they need.

We knew this would be a great organization to support, but when we found out it was the official charity of the Boston Red Sox, we knew it was fate. We could celebrate the success of a locally loved team, while contributing to a charity that helps to support so many deserving individuals – it doesn’t get better than that!

So, how are we giving back? Well, with every Red Sox sweep, we give $1,000 to the Jimmy Fund. Interested in learning more about this organization? We’ve got more info below.

The History of the Jimmy Fund

The Jimmy Fund started over 70 years ago when The Variety Club of New England did a radio broadcast featuring a young cancer patient referred to as “Jimmy.”

So, who was this Jimmy? Well, this was a fake name given to 12-year-old Einar Gustafson who was a cancer patient at the hospital at the time. On May 22, 1948, he was surprised during the broadcast by the visit from members of his favorite baseball team – the Boston Braves. The overall goal of the broadcast was to raise money for a new TV that Einar could watch the games on.

All that was initially requested from listeners was enough costs to cover the costs of the television. What came of it was over $200,000 in donations. Thus, the Jimmy Fund began.

After the broadcast, a series of short films were created. These were then played in movie theaters to promote both the Jimmy Fund and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, in hopes of inspiring others to donate, as well.

What is the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute?

Sidney Farber

And what about the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute itself? Well, this organization started out at the Children’s Cancer Research Foundation and was founded by Sidney Farber, MD. His goal was to ensure children with cancer were treated with top-of-the-line care, while also ensuring research on treatment and cures was supported, too.

In 1969, this care expanded to patients of all ages, and in 1974 the name was changed to honor the founder. The final name change came in 1983 to show appreciation for long-term supporter, Charles A. Dana. And today it’s still known as the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

Needless to say, the organization has grown significantly over the years. Nowadays the institute…

  • Has over 5,000 staff, faculty, and clinicians
  • Supports more than 640,000 outpatients annually
  • Has more than 1,000 hospital discharges every year
  • Has over 1,100 clinical trials currently open
  • Is internationally renowned for the excellent work is does
  • Has made contributions to 35 of the 75 recently FDA-approved cancer drugs
  • Is a principle teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical school
  • Is a federally designated Center for AIDS Research
  • Is a founding member of the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center
  • Maintains affiliations with nursing schools throughout the Boston area
  • Conducts community-based programs that support cancer prevention, control, and research throughout New England
  • Maintains joint programs with a wide array of Boston institutions

What really makes Dana-Farber unique is its commitment to both patient wellbeing and the research they so desperately need to ensure they’re getting the most up-to-date care possible.

And here at Sweepnman, we’re proud to do more to support organizations that have already done so much.
