Any time there’s money involved, someone will figure out a way to scam some of it from unsuspecting people. This is true in the chimney services industry, and it’s important that you’re aware of the signs that you’re about to be “taken to the cleaners,” as the saying goes. Sweepnman of North Reading, MA, would like to share some tips on spotting the common signs of a chimney scam.
Two types of scams
There are two primary types of scams you need to be aware of.
Chimney scam type 1
One type involves requesting payment in advance for chimney services supposedly needed. After you pay, you never hear from the scammer again.
These scammers aren’t chimney workers. They don’t have equipment or a local office. They know only enough about chimney service to make you think they’re legitimate.
You may find their phone number listed in a Google search, or they may call you directly to solicit your business.
Chimney scam type 2
The second type of scam involves the technician starting to work on the service you hired them for and then finding all kinds of additional work that “needs to be done.”
These scammers may actually be able to work on chimneys, but their business is built on selling you expensive services you don’t need.
How to spot a scam and protect yourself
Keep in mind that a well-organized scam will often appear to be a legitimate offer. The following tips will help you see through a shady proposition.
Don’t buy over the phone
If a person tries to sell you chimney services over the phone, don’t take the bait.
Call centers
If you respond to a chimney service ad and reach a call center, hang up.
Meet in person
Never agree to do business with any chimney company or individual until you meet them face-to-face.
Look at their vehicles
Professional chimney companies have clearly marked service vehicles that include a phone number. Scammers may drive anything – or show up at your house on foot.
Ask for references
Request the names and contact information of several of the company’s local customers, and contact them before agreeing to any services.
Don’t pay up front
Never pay all or a large portion of an estimated chimney service cost in advance.
Visit their website
Qualified chimney companies include certain things on their sites that you should look for:
- Confirmation that they do the kind of work you’re looking to have done
- Services described in ways you can understand
- Highlights of their industry certifications and affiliations
- Online reviews
- Complete contact information, including a physical address in your area
- Photos of their technicians performing various jobs
A second opinion
If you have any concerns about a price you were quoted or an outline of services you allegedly need, call another chimney company for a second opinion. Credible chimney companies won’t object to their customers taking this action.
