Are You Using Your Damper Correctly?

During our notoriously cold winters in Massachusetts, New Englanders from the North Shore to the Merrimack Valley often light their fireplaces to stay warm and cozy.  Here’s how to use your chimney damper.

Types of Fireplace Dampers

Before we start talking about using your damper, it helps to understand the type of damper you have. Most fireplaces have one of two types:

Throat Dampers

Located just above the firebox, these are the traditional metal or iron plates that you operate with a handle, pull chain, or knob. Because throat dampers are installed just above the firebox, their proximity to the flames exposes them to rusting and warping. This damage creates air pockets that can allow drafts to enter the room.

How to Adjust: Look for a metal rod inside your firebox or a knob on the outside of the fireplace.

  • To Open: Push the rod all the way up or turn the knob clockwise until it stops. You should be able to see outside or feel the draft when the damper is open.
  • To Close: Pull the lever down or turn the knob counter-clockwise until the damper is completely shut.

Top-Sealing Dampers

Installed at the top of the chimney flue. These dampers feature a rubber gasket that seals the entire flue when the fireplace isn’t in use. These are much more energy-efficient and provide more protection against the elements.

How to Adjust: Look for the stainless-steel cable and a handle mounted to the side wall of your firebox.

  • To Open: Release the cable from its bracket to open the damper.
  • To Close: Pull the cable down and lock it into the bottom bracket.

Caution: Always keep your damper fully open while it is lit.
